I only know you as you are

As your breath heaves like a barge

I only see you as you are

Sitting there rather large

I feel so small next to you

Though I smell fear through your left shoe

What is it about me that you fear so

For I am no more than a spotted forest doe

And your friend the nervous one

Down on his luck

Tongue all tied up and voice stuck

What do you fear when you see me

I am only a lone bird in a tree

But perhaps you feel something inside

Something hidden that can no longer hide

You know I can see you, into your soul

And you are afraid of your empty hole

But fearing the dark within

Is like fearing the cloudless night

When all you hear is the heart’s din

And you feel with all your might
